International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2021

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS)! Today is dedicated to recognising the crucial role women and girls play and have always played in science and technology.

President Michael D. Higgins marked the occasion with a message celebrating the contribution of women to the field of science and issued a special appeal to young girls to 'carry your knowledge and skills with pride'.

IDWGS was formally recognised by the United Nations in 2015 and every year since, 11th February has been celebrated as an important opportunity to promote full and equal access to and to strengthen participation in science for women, girls and other underrepresented groups.

Global statistics, from the UN, concerning women and girl’s participation in science shows that there is huge room for improvement. For instance, did you know that less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women? Or that according to the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute, “of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job, only 12 per cent were women.”

We believe careers have no gender! Whatever your passion, there is a course out there for you. Check out all the further education and training courses on offer at www.fetchcourses.ie.

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
